FAIRPLAY - History

1905 FAIRPLAY is established in Hamburg by Mr. Richard Borchardt. The company quickly prospers with port- and coastal-towages in Hamburg on the River Elbe and the Baltic as well as with professional salvage-operations
1914 FAIRPLAY's fleet consists of 13 tugs at the start of WW1; these are operative in Hamburg, the River Elbe ports and along the entire German costline.
1930FAIRPLAY's management structure changes after the untimely death of the company`s founder. Richard Borchardt`s wife Lucy and their son Kurt the reins in hand.
1932 FAIRPLAY is a founding member of the first "Joint Tugboat Service" in Hamburg which offers shipowners uninterupted services 24hrs a day, 365 days a year
1952 FAIRPLAY re-establishes the "Joint Tugboat Service" pre-war service patterns
1967 FAIRPLAY enters into worldwide deep-sea towage and international salvage; this milestone is marked by commissioning of Fairplay´s first deepsea tug FAIRPLAY X
1974 FAIRPLAY orders the first state-of-the-art  Schottel Tractor Tug "FAIRPLAY II",  first in a series of four similar ships delivered until 1984. 
1990 FAIRPLAY establishes an office in Rostock with additional small offices in Wismar, Stralsund and Wolgast. With this market entry introduces modern tractor-tugs in the Baltic Ports of re-unified Germany
1997 FAIRPLAY starts starts building a series of 4 harbour and offshore tugs. "FAIRPLAY-21" to "FAIRPLAY-24" are commissioned between 1998 an early 2000. 
1998 FAIRPLAY takes advantage of the European aconomic liberalisation and starts harbour towage operations in the port of Rotterdam.
1998 FAIRPLAY achieves the ISO 9001 / ISM certification for all its offices and the entire fleet
2000/1 FAIRPLAY commissions the newbuildings "FAIRPLAY 25" and "FAIRPLAY 26" with each 5500 BHP and 65 tons bollard pull.
2001/2 FAIRPLAY charters "FAIRPLAY 25" and "FAIRPLAY 26" to the German Government as Emergency Towing Vessel (ETVs). Stationed in Rostock and Sassnitz, these tugs are part of the Germany Coastal Protection Scheme.
2003FAIRPLAYbuys the marine activities of the Szczecin-based former Porta Holding Group. The company is renamed Project Zegluga and in 2005 starts harbour towage operation in Szczecin in competition to the established towage provider.
2004 FAIRPLAY becomes 50% shareholder of the Belgian towage provider "Unie van Redding- en Sleepdienst" (URS), Antwerp. In this 50/50 partnership with Smit International, URS continues as an independent company under its own name. URS operates more than 45 tugs in the ports of Antwerp, Flushing, Terneuzen, Ghent, Zeebrugge and Oostend
2005 FAIRPLAY celebrates its 100th. Anniversary
2006FAIRPLAY achieves ISO 14001:2004 certification for the entire organisation.
2006FAIRPLAY establishes Fairplay Towage Sp z.o.o in Szczecin/Poland
2007FAIRPLAY welcomes the new tugs "Fairplay III" and "Fairplay I", two 70ts harbour tugs out of a series of 6 ships ordered in Spain
2007FAIRPLAY celebrates the 125th anniversary of its shipyard "Theodor Buschmann GmbH & Co.".
2008FAIRPLAY exchanges its 50% share in URS or share in global towage provider Smit Inertenationale NV.
2008FAIRPLAY buys the Polish towage company PORT-HOL, located in Swinoujscie
   
2008FAIRPLAY acquires 50% of "Muller Martime Holding BV", the holding company of Terneuzen.
   
2008FAIRPLAY takes delivery of the new Offshore- and Salvage tug "Fairplay-30" with 85ts bollard pull, built by Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Armon
   
2008FAIRPLAY and Multraship start a joint towage operation with 4 tugs in the Port of Antwerp under the name "Antwerp Towage".
   
2009FAIRPLAY takes delivery of "Fairplay-31, an identical sister vessel of "Fairplay-30" boasting 90ts bollard bull after some modifications.
   
2009FAIRPLAY commissions "FAIRPLAY X" and "FAIRPLAY XIV", again 70ts harbour tugs an identical sisters to "FAIRPLAY I & III".

FAIRPLAY

 

 

receives the new ETV "BALTIC "for the ARGE Küstenschutz" from shipbuilder Astilleros Armon, Vigo. ETV "BALTIC" is on charter to the German Goverment since September 2010. The ETV is stationed in Rostock. In January 2011 ETV "NORDIC", bulit at Peenewerft Wolgast/Germany is delivered to ARGE Küstenschutz and commences its charter for the German Goverment.

FAIRPLAY

 

sells its deepsea tug "FAIRPLAY IX" to Greece. This tug has - like its sister "FAIRPLAY XIV" which was sold 2009 - sailed for almost 40 years hundreds of thausands of miles under the flag of Fairplay Towage.
   
2011FAIRPLAYestablishes "FAIRPLAY Polska" under which Fairplay´s activities in Poland will forthwith bundled.
   
2011
FAIRPLAY
buys a Romanian-built 103 tons anchor handling tug an names it "FAIRPLAY-33". End 2011 the identical sister is delivered and taken into Fairplay management.
   
2011FAIRPLAYacquires Gdynia-based towage provider WUZ. With a fleet of 9 tugs, WUZ provides harbour services, costal tows as well as mooring and pilot-tender services.
